Hauiti Huinga Rangatahi 2019

The inaugural Hauiti Huinga Rangatahi was held as part of the Te Ahikā commemorations in 2019. This event was implemented by the Hauiti Mataatahi - Ūawa Youth Advisory Group.

The theme for the Hauiti Huinga Rangatahi was ‘Te Ahikā’ - coming home, reconnecting, strengthening bonds and contributing to the legacy for the future. The 4-day programme took place from 30 September to 3 October 2019. The programme focused on rangatahi aged 12-18 years old. The summit was hosted at Hauiti Marae, Te Rawheoro Marae and Hinemaurea Marae in Ūawa - Tolaga Bay. 70 rangatahi participated in the 4 day event, along with 10 adult mentors. There were many activities that the rangatahi led, contributed to and participated in.

Ultimately, we would like to thank all the rangatahi and mentors who participated in this inaugural Hauiti Huinga Rangatahi. We would also like to acknowledge the support received to host this event. Overall, through korero, activities and special additions, we achieved the aspirations we had set out for our first Hauiti Huinga Rangatahi;

Te Ahikā: To acknowledge the legacy that we have received from the stories of our past and to craft the legacy that we will leave for the generations of Ūawa and the Tairāwhiti. In short, it is about coming home, reconnecting, strengthening bonds and contributing to the legacy for the future.
